Hugo Weaving in Slow Horses

Hugo Weaving plays Frank Harkness, introduced in Series 4 and returning in Series 6. His casting brings a distinctive voice and considerable screen presence to a thriller that often hides danger behind shabby rooms and ordinary conversations. Frank can be hospitable and frightening within the same exchange. Weaving keeps those qualities together, allowing charm to remain part of the threat rather than a disguise discarded when the violence starts.

He is especially effective opposite Jack Lowden. River tends to act quickly, while Frank can make the younger man wait for information. The difference in tempo gives their encounters a pressure that does not depend on constant movement. A measured explanation can be more alarming than a shouted instruction when the person offering it controls the situation.

Series 4 standout scene: spoilers

The restaurant conversation in Series 4, episode 6 is the performance’s central showcase. River has recognised Frank as his father, but Frank responds by presenting recruitment into his mercenary business as an opportunity. Weaving gives that grotesque proposal the manner of an ordinary professional discussion. The calm delivery makes the threat beneath it more disturbing, and leaves Lowden room to show River weighing information he cannot comfortably absorb.

Series 6 appearance: spoilers

Frank’s arrival at David Cartwright’s funeral in the Series 6 premiere brings him back into River’s life at a moment of grief. His violence interrupts any expectation of a peaceful reunion. The scene continues the earlier contrast between Frank’s apparent familiarity and the danger he creates for the people around him.

How Weaving approached Frank

Interview discussion — Series 4 spoilers

Speaking to GamesRadar+ in 2024, Weaving explained why he did not start by treating Harkness simply as a villain. He approached him as a man with his own convictions, however appalling their consequences. He also praised the finale’s opening revelation and described Frank’s offer to River as preposterous. Those comments identify the performance’s uncomfortable balance: Frank’s reasoning can be absurd without the actor making him a joke.

Film and stage highlights

Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive records Weaving as Martin in Proof (1991), Mitzi Del Bra in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), Agent Smith in The Matrix (1999), and Elrond in The Lord of the Rings films (2001–2003). That sequence spans an intimate Australian drama, a road movie and two internationally familiar fantasy worlds.

Agent Smith’s formal diction offers an obvious comparison with Frank, but Priscilla is a better reminder of the range behind that familiar voice. Elrond, meanwhile, gives Weaving a different kind of authority: knowledge and responsibility rather than coercion. These roles should not be collapsed into a single category of imposing older men.

His stage work includes Sydney Theatre Company’s Waiting for Godot in 2013, alongside Richard Roxburgh. The company’s education materials document the production, while its later Endgame programme records his continuing association with Beckett’s work. Theatre adds another context for the patient exchanges and controlled rhythms that make his television scenes compelling.

Where to watch next

Proof (1991) is a useful starting point beyond the blockbusters. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) offers a sharply different emotional register. The Matrix (1999) contains his Agent Smith performance, and The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) introduces his Elrond. Choose among those four according to whether you want Australian character drama, a road movie, science fiction or epic fantasy.
