London without the fiasco
A plain-English transport briefing for first-time visitors moving between the Slough House files.
Best default for most adults: use one contactless card or device per person, and use that exact same card or device throughout. Touch in and out on rail; touch in only on buses and trams.
Elizabeth line
Fast, air-conditioned links through Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street. It is especially useful for Heathrow and the Farringdon location cluster.
London Overground
Useful for avoiding Zone 1 and reaching neighbourhoods around the centre. Check the named route and destination: the orange network has several branches.
Buses
Cashless. Touch in only. The Hopper fare covers unlimited bus and tram journeys within one hour of the first touch. Night buses are marked with an N; many ordinary routes also run 24 hours.
National Rail
Useful for Harlow, Castle Combe via Chippenham, Gatwick, Luton and wider day trips. Contactless/Oyster boundaries vary—check before boarding beyond London zones.
Contactless & Oyster
Pay as you go is usually simplest. Each traveller needs a separate card/device. Overseas card fees may apply. A standard Oyster is a useful alternative; Visitor Oyster cannot be registered.
Fares & zones
How charging works
Most central files are in Zones 1–2. Rail fares depend on zones, route and time; bus fares are flat.
Caps, peak times and mistakes
- Daily caps limit eligible pay-as-you-go spending within the zones travelled.
- Weekly capping runs Monday–Sunday. Switching between a physical card and the same card in a phone wallet counts as switching payment methods.
- A missing touch can create a maximum fare. Ask station staff promptly or check your journey history.
- Do not use one card for several adults: the gate needs a unique payment token for each passenger.
- Pink readers can show an out-of-Zone-1 route. Touch them when your planned route requires it.
Night travel and safety
The Night Tube operates on selected lines on Friday and Saturday nights; Night Overground service is limited. Check live service before setting out. Use staffed, well-lit routes, keep phones secure near doors, and do not stand at the platform edge while consulting a map. In an emergency call 999; text British Transport Police on 61016 for non-emergency rail incidents.

Airport transfers
There is no single best airport route: balance fare, luggage, arrival time and where you are staying.
Heathrow
Elizabeth line: fast through central London and direct to Farringdon. Piccadilly line: slower but often cheaper and useful for the West End. Heathrow Express: fastest to Paddington, priced separately.
Gatwick
Thameslink is convenient for London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras. Southern serves Victoria. Gatwick Express is the dedicated Victoria option.
Stansted
Stansted Express runs to Liverpool Street, near the City location cluster. Coach services can be cheaper but are traffic-sensitive.
Luton
Luton DART links the terminal with Luton Airport Parkway; Thameslink runs onwards towards St Pancras, Farringdon and central London.
London City
DLR connects the airport to the Tube and Elizabeth line. It is compact and usually the simplest airport for City-based stays.
Accessibility
All London buses are low-floor wheelchair accessible, subject to space. Rail step-free access varies from street-to-platform versus street-to-train. Check lift status and book assistance where helpful.
