A Cotswolds day trip to Upshott
Castle Combe supplies the country-village streets of Upshott in Series 2, taking River Cartwright away from the cramped London offices into a place where meeting strangers looks considerably easier than recognising danger. The attraction for visitors is a compact walk through stone houses, around the Market Cross and down towards the By Brook. You can see the village from its public streets without arranging a filming tour or seeking access to a house.
Allow a day for the London journey, onward transport and lunch, with a short village visit at its centre. Reserve the separate City walking routes for another outing.
Evidence and the episodes
Confirmed: VisitBritain's south-west film and television itinerary identifies Castle Combe's main street as a Series 2 filming location. This confirms the village exterior; it does not identify every building used for Upshott's interiors.
The relevant story runs through From Upshott with Love, Drinking Games and Cicada. River arrives under cover, makes acquaintances and discovers how misleading their apparent friendliness can be. Those episode guides explain the investigation in spoiler-hidden recaps. On a visit, concentrate on the village street setting: the unfamiliar countryside assignment is the connection, rather than a claim that the whole fictional village exists here exactly as shown.
From London and Chippenham
Take a Great Western Railway train from London Paddington to Chippenham. The Elizabeth line can bring you to Paddington, where you change to the national-rail platforms; it does not continue to Chippenham. Choose the train before booking your onward journey so that the two legs work together.
Chippenham station is the nearest railway stop. The official village guide gives about 15 minutes for a taxi ride to Castle Combe. Arrange both outward and return journeys, agreeing a collection point near the Market Cross with the driver. A booked return makes the small village visit much easier to plan around your train home.
Faresaver lists routes 95 and 95A between Chippenham and Castle Combe via Yatton Keynell. Use the operator's current timetable to select an outward service and a workable return, checking which Castle Combe stop each journey serves. A stop in the lower village and one uphill are different arrival experiences. Do not assume a train arrival will connect immediately with a bus.
A short village walk
Begin at the Market Cross, the useful landmark for orientating yourself in the lower village. Look along the street towards the houses and the rising approach road, then walk towards St Andrew's Church. Allow roughly two minutes between the cross and the church exterior, with longer for looking at the stonework. Public streets provide the filming-location visit; an open church door is a separate invitation governed by church arrangements.
Return to the cross and follow the main street downhill towards the bridge over the By Brook. Allow about five minutes at an easy walking pace. This gives a changing view of the cottages and a clear sense of how compact the village centre is. At the bridge, look back up the street before retracing your route. Keep out of the carriageway when stopping for photographs.
For the basic cross, church and bridge circuit, allow around 30–45 minutes including pauses. Add lunch and the journey from your arrival point, especially if you use the upper car park. These are planning estimates for this suggested walk, rather than scheduled transport times.
Lunch, coffee and access
The Castle Inn stands in the old market square, making it a convenient lunch stop near the start and finish of the circuit. Its own website lists the bar daily from noon to 11pm; Monday–Saturday lunch is noon to 2.30pm, with light bites from 3pm to 5.30pm. Sunday roast service runs from noon to 8pm. These hours were checked on 12 October 2026; check the venue again before travelling, particularly for a holiday visit.
The Old Stables Coffee Shop in the Estate Yard provides another named break. Choose coffee before the bridge walk or after returning uphill to the village centre. There is no need to fit both venues into a short stop: a single seated break leaves time for the streets and your return connection.
Village streets have no ticketed admission or attraction opening time. Businesses, church services and private properties follow their own arrangements. The visitor toilets are on Water Lane: cross the town bridge, follow the river on your left and look to the right for the facilities.
Accessibility and when to go
National Rail lists Chippenham as category A, with step-free access to all platforms and lifts. Arrange rail assistance where needed and book a suitable onward vehicle. Village access is a separate consideration: narrow streets, uneven surfaces and shared traffic require more care than the station's step-free classification suggests.
The designated visitor car park is on Dunns Lane in Upper Castle Combe. The descent into the lower village brings a hill into the walk, followed by an uphill return. For a shorter outing, discuss a lower-village drop-off with your transport provider and keep the circuit close to the Market Cross. Wheelchair users should confirm vehicle access and any pub entrance requirements directly before booking.
A weekday morning suits an unhurried look at the streets, with lunch afterwards. Busy weekends and bank holidays put pressure on the small centre and its parking. In autumn or winter, put the walk before your meal while daylight is available.
Good to know: Keep to public streets, leave doorways clear and photograph the village without approaching private gardens or windows.
Combine it with
Within Castle Combe, combine the main street with the church exterior, Market Cross and By Brook bridge. These are nearby village sights, not additional claims about Slow Horses filming. For another confirmed location from the programme, save the Aldersgate Street frontage for a London day and use the walking routes to connect the City stops.
