Spoiler-free overview

Standing by the Wall: The Collected Slough House Novellas is the 2022 Soho Crime volume bringing five shorter works together. The collection follows the intelligence world beyond the numbered novels, with handlers, retired spies, troublesome information exchanges and a Christmas visit to Slough House. Its title includes the name of that final story, so the subtitle matters: the collected volume and the individual Christmas work are different items containing overlapping material.

The useful distinction is one of scope. A shorter work can stay with a particular difficulty rather than bringing every strand of a full-length ensemble novel into play. Read these stories alongside the main sequence if you want to explore that difference. For readers building a collection, the gathered volume is also a straightforward way to avoid searching separately for several editions, provided you check what you already own.

The five works

The publisher confirms The List, The Marylebone Drop, The Catch, The Last Dead Letter and Standing by the Wall. The Marylebone Drop is the American title of The Drop. The Last Dead Letter also appears in Dolphin Junction, so that story is another point of overlap to consider before choosing a copy.

How to fit it into your reading

You can read the collected contents in order, or interleave the individual works by their publication dates. The List belongs around the early novels, The Drop between London Rules and Joe Country, The Catch between Joe Country and Slough House, and the Christmas story after Bad Actors. These are recommendations based on publication order, giving the shorter works room between the larger books rather than treating them as additional numbered novels.

For a first Slough House novel, begin with Slow Horses. For somebody already enjoying the main sequence, this collection makes a useful companion: keep it nearby and turn to the relevant work when you reach its place in the publication list. Readers following John Bachelor can also use the first three stories as a smaller recurring-character sequence inside the wider bibliography.

Plot discussion

Reveal the situations behind four works

In The List, Dieter Hess’s death exposes another bank account and forces his handler, John Bachelor, to confront the possibility of divided loyalties. The Marylebone Drop begins with retired operative Solomon Dortmund observing an envelope exchange; his report reaches Bachelor and threatens several people’s fragile positions. An apparently modest piece of information therefore becomes something headquarters must handle, with Diana Taverner prepared to sacrifice individuals to protect the institution.

The Catch gives Bachelor a search he cannot comfortably refuse. Visitors from Regent’s Park want him to find Benny Manors, a former client carrying secrets, while Bachelor is trying to retain his accommodation in a dead operative’s flat. In the Christmas story, attention returns to Slough House itself: Lamb commissions Roddy Ho to alter a photograph. Together, these premises move from the consequences of a dead agent’s arrangements to a living spy’s attempt to edit an image of the past.

Editions, audiobook and television

The publisher lists the US paperback and ebook on 1 November 2022 under the full collected title. The individual Christmas story has a separate UK audio listing, so do not mistake an audiobook bearing its shorter title for an audio recording of all five contents. Television reading starts with the numbered novels behind the series; the collection is a way to continue exploring their literary world through shorter fiction.
