Who is Moira Tregorian?

Moira Tregorian is an MI5 administrator whose confidence in correct procedure makes her an awkward fit for Jackson Lamb’s department. She knows how the Service keeps its records, communicates between offices and gets everyday work done. Her expertise is practical, but she expects it to carry authority. Putting her beside people who routinely ignore instructions produces a particularly sharp kind of workplace comedy.

She is distinct from Molly Doran, the archivist played by Naomi Wirthner. Moira works with the living organisation: its administrative arrangements, professional hierarchies and people who can provide information. Those connections make her useful even when Lamb would rather dismiss her. Her presence also asks a familiar Slough House question: does an employee’s transfer reveal incompetence, or somebody else’s wish to remove a nuisance?

Joanna Scanlan’s performance

Joanna Scanlan gives Moira an upright, businesslike bearing that resists the office’s general collapse into disorder. Her delivery makes a request sound like an expectation already established. The character can be funny without noticing the joke, because she believes the discussion ought to proceed on her terms.

Speaking to Flickering Myth in 2024, Scanlan described a woman primarily concerned with her own interests. She contrasted Moira’s attention to administration with Catherine’s sensitivity towards other people. That distinction helps explain why apparently comparable office jobs create such different characters: Moira measures competence through organisation, while Catherine recognises the person behind the problem.

Moira in the books and on screen

The television introduction draws on Spook Street. Scanlan identified a deliberate change in presentation: the novel’s cardigan-wearing administrator becomes a more polished television professional. She connected that choice to the appearance expected of women building careers in the 1980s and 1990s. Costume gives Moira a different silhouette from Catherine before either woman explains her working methods.

That alteration does not turn administrative work into decoration. Both versions make institutional knowledge consequential. Moira’s importance lies in what she understands about the organisation and the advantage she can obtain from it, rather than in suddenly becoming an adventurous field agent. Reading Herron alongside the adaptation reveals how dress and delivery can sharpen a character without changing the basic value of her expertise.

Key relationships

Jackson Lamb challenges Moira’s insistence on order with provocation and neglect. Their exchanges are negotiations between incompatible working styles. Catherine Standish provides the clearer comparison: both women can keep an office functioning, but they bring different assumptions about care and loyalty to that responsibility.

Claude Whelan connects her story to the Park’s management culture. Diana Taverner represents another kind of institutional power, where useful information can matter more than a formal job description. Moira belongs in that network of office politics as much as in Lamb’s cramped rooms.

Moira’s arc by series

Series 4 spoilers

Moira replaces Catherine at Slough House and refuses to accept Lamb’s habits as ordinary office practice. Her administrative contacts assist the investigation. By the finale, she uses information about Whelan to secure her return to the Park. The ending rewards her ability to recognise leverage rather than any affection for the department.

Series 6 spoilers: episodes 1–4

Catherine consults Moira when Slough House disappears from the Park’s records. Soon afterwards, attackers posing as gas engineers leave her unconscious in her home. Catherine, Shirley and Louisa rescue her, bringing an office rival into their escape group. By episode four, they have reached Taverner’s holiday home. Moira’s return turns administrative rivalry into a shared struggle to survive.
