Granary Square on screen

Granary Square is one of the most rewarding Slow Horses stops because the action uses a recognisable public landscape. The square, canal and Lighterman are close enough to explore together, and each remains readable without special access. Arrive from King’s Boulevard and the change from traffic to open pedestrian space is immediate. The broad square lets you stand back, compare the buildings and see how the water divides the neighbourhood.

The location belongs to Series 4 episode 6, “Hello Goodbye”. River’s encounter with Harkness at the Lighterman leads into the waterfront confrontation. Film London’s supervising location manager Ian Pollington confirms filming across the King’s Cross estate and at the pub, including action involving a grenade and the canal. Time Out identifies the episode and explains that the production hired the Lighterman for night shoots. Later action also uses St Pancras, completing the neighbourhood connection.

A visit from public space

The Lighterman stands on the eastern side of the square beside the canal. From the public paths you can see its exterior, the relationship between the terraces and water, and the approaches across the square. Continue towards the Granary Building for a wider view back across the fountains. Moving between these viewpoints is more useful than searching for one supposedly definitive spot: the sequence uses several angles and changes the apparent distance between its participants.

The restaurant operates as a real business. Its tables, service areas and terraces belong to customers and staff, so exterior viewing is the straightforward option. If you choose to eat or drink there, visit as a customer and follow the venue’s arrangements. Nothing in the public-square visit requires entry to an occupied dining room. The fountains are also a family play space; frame architectural photographs without singling out children or interrupting anyone’s afternoon.

Station directions and accessibility

King’s Cross St Pancras · 8 min walk: take the exit signed for Regent’s Canal, beside the German Gymnasium. Walk north up King’s Boulevard, cross Goods Way at the crossing and continue over the canal bridge into Granary Square. The Lighterman is on your right. This estimate covers about six hundred metres from the street exit, with time for the crossing; the internal walk from your train platform is additional.

The station has step-free Tube access, while the estate’s principal pedestrian routes offer broad paved paths. The official visitor guide identifies a ramp to the canal towpath behind the Lighterman, lifts and ramps at Coal Drops Yard, and wheelchair-accessible public toilets. Use that ramp instead of the broad canal-side steps. Some historic surfaces are cobbled, so a route through the square can be easier than exploring every lower passage around the shops.

Opening, refreshments and timing

Visitor information checked on 12 October 2026: the King’s Cross estate is open to the public at all times; its official guide gives Coal Drops Yard visitor hours as 10am–11pm. Shops and restaurants have individual opening times. Public toilets are listed at Coal Drops Yard and West Handyside Canopy near Waitrose. Events, fountain maintenance or temporary closures can alter which part of the square is usable, so follow signs when you arrive.

Caravan, at 1 Granary Square in the Granary Building, is a convenient coffee and food stop directly beside the square. The estate’s official listing identifies the venue and links to current opening times. It offers a useful alternative to making the Lighterman your only break. Visit on a weekday morning for easier architectural photographs, or in late afternoon when the square feels more like a neighbourhood gathering place. Wet paving around the fountains calls for a little extra care.

Building a longer walk

For a compact route, pair Granary Square with St Pancras and allow ten minutes to walk back to the station’s public concourse. The King’s Cross to the canal route follows this sequence and includes time for photographs. Coal Drops Yard and the canal-side paths provide an attractive extension between the two filming stops, without needing to treat every building you pass as a screen location.

The Lamb–Taverner bench at Cumberland Basin is a different section of Regent’s Canal, towards Primrose Hill. It is not the water immediately outside the Lighterman. Combining both means a substantially longer walk through Camden; allow roughly an hour at an ordinary walking pace, plus stops and towpath delays. Keep the Granary Square confrontation and the earlier clandestine canal conversation as two distinct destinations when planning your day.
