The other side of Slough House

The back of Slough House belongs to a different London street from its familiar frontage. In Film London’s Series 4 production interview, location manager Ian Pollington identifies St John Street as the rear alleyway. Time Out adds that the fire escape was filmed in a service yard. This is the less polished side of the television office: an exit into the working city rather than a grand headquarters entrance.

Confirmed: the production identifies the street. Composite: the finished office combines this rear exterior with Aldersgate Street and studio interiors. Visit the two street settings as separate stops. There is no passage for visitors to follow through the fictional office, and walking around the Aldersgate building will not reproduce the characters’ route to the back stairs.

Scenes and episodes

The rear exterior is part of the recurring Slough House setting, with its continued use confirmed by the Series 4 location interview. Begin with the Series 4 guide when comparing the office’s different exteriors. The production sources identify the location’s function across the series rather than assigning every glimpse of the fire escape to a particular episode, so the street is best approached as a recurring setting.

On screen, rear access makes the office feel cramped and makeshift. Entrances, exits and street-level movements create a contrast with the Park’s controlled spaces. Watching for the change between front and rear is useful because the editing makes two independent locations feel like adjacent sides of one building. That trick becomes much clearer once you have walked between the neighbourhoods yourself.

What a visit involves

St John Street is a public street with pavements, businesses and servicing activity. The useful visit is a walk through the Smithfield end of the street, looking at its relationship to the surrounding lanes. The production interviews do not publish a numbered visitor entrance for the yard. Keep your photographs to what is visible from public land and treat closed gates as the end of the visit.

Do not plan around access to the stairs themselves. A service entrance remains a working entrance even when it becomes recognisable television scenery. A short street-level stop works well between the office frontage and a coffee break; it avoids turning a modest rear setting into an attraction requiring access arrangements that the production has never offered.

Farringdon station · 6 min walk

Use Farringdon’s Cowcross Street exit. Walk east along Cowcross Street until it meets St John Street, then turn left to explore the street north of the junction. Allow about six minutes for the approach and a short look along this part of St John Street. This is a walking estimate to the filming street, rather than a direction to a publicly accessible filming yard.

Farringdon serves the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, Thameslink and the Elizabeth line. If you arrive through the Elizabeth line entrance on Long Lane, head west towards Smithfield and continue to St John Street. Choose your station exit before following the route: Farringdon’s entrances serve different sides of the neighbourhood, and a route beginning at Cowcross Street cannot be followed from Long Lane without adjusting the first turn.

Accessibility and access

Farringdon offers a step-free arrival option; use TfL’s journey planner for the platforms and entrances relevant to your train. The visit itself stays at pavement level and avoids the fictional stairs. Street crossings, kerbs and loading movements require more attention than the television view suggests. Give delivery vehicles room and take a longer pavement route rather than squeezing between a parked vehicle and a gate.

Access information checked on 12 October 2026: the suggested walk uses public streets; the service yard is not presented as a visitor attraction. There are no published filming-location admission hours to quote. Choose daylight for the exterior walk, and check current lift availability when planning the station approach.

A break and the next stop

The Sutton Arms at 6 Carthusian Street makes a convenient pub stop on the way towards the frontage. Head towards Charterhouse Square and then Carthusian Street. The pub’s own website lists beers, wines and food, so it offers a straightforward place to pause without needing a detour across the City. Its opening times should determine when you build a pub break into the walk.

Continue east to Slough House – Aldersgate Street for the recognisable upper windows. Alternatively, return towards Farringdon and cross west towards Leather Lane Market. The former pairs two halves of one screen address; the latter links the office neighbourhood to Series 4’s opening street scene.

Questions and answers

Is St John Street the back of the Aldersgate building?

No. The production joins separate exteriors into a single fictional office.

Can visitors climb the Slough House fire escape?

The service yard and stairs are not a public visitor attraction. Stay on the pavement.

Which station should I use?

Farringdon is the practical starting point for this street walk, with a six-minute allowance from Cowcross Street.
